Dem Schriftsteller Mike Klein gelingt es, den Entwurf zu "Die Wexler-Chroniken" an den Fernsehsender PDN zu verkaufen. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Charakter-Story, die sich hauptsächlich zum den (tatsächlich geschehenen) Selbstmord seines Bruders dreht. Recht schnell muss Mike lernen, dass die Realisierung seiner Vision ein harter Kampf werden wird. Vom Casting bis zur endgültigen Produktion scheint einfach alles falsch zu laufen. In der Welt der Fernsehsender bestimmt eine kleine Hand voll mächtiger, hoch konkurrenzfähiger Manager Amerikas Programmauswahl. Lenny ist die eigensinnige Präsidentin von PDN (deren meistvertraute Beraterin ihre 14-jährige Tochter ist). Sie muss alle kreativen Entscheidungen des Senders genehmigen. Lenny glaubt, dass die Story der "Wexler-Chroniken" für das Vorabend-Programm zu deprimierend ist. Richard McCallister, der zuvor für die BBC arbeitete, wurde kürzlich bei PDN angestellt, um für etwas mehr Klasse im Programm zu sorgen. Im Bezug auf die "Die Wexler-Chroniken" gelingt ihm das jedoch nicht. Mehr und mehr sieht Mike seinen Traum schwinden und das beeinflusst im Laufe der Zeit auf seinen Gesundheits- und Gemütszustand negativ. Wird sich sein Traum dennoch zu aller Zufriedenheit verwirklichen lassen...?
