Thank you for your interest in this offer for a Montblanc Simplo Safety #4 fountain pen in mottled red from the mid-1920s. Montblanc fountain pens are usually black and sometimes available with ornamentation – however, they are very rarely found in some other colours, including mottled red. They are incredibly rare and highly sought-after collector’s items. Discovering such an example alone is a stroke of luck, and a find like this is virtually impossible. It is fitted with an extremely rare 18-karat gold nib (practically all Safety #4 pens from this period are marked “14 carat”. This fountain pen was presumably made for the French market, where 18-karat gold was required in order to be declared as “gold”). Even the feed is made of mottled black-and-red ebonite.
