The “SMED” model was designed in 1978 by designer Rutger Andersson and has been part of the Swedish furniture company IKEA’s collection since 1986. This functional coat stand made of chrome-plated steel tubing dates from the postmodern phase of the 1980s and was created at a time when IKEA was fundamentally changing its range. “SMED” was Rutger Andersson’s first design as a designer at IKEA.

The coat stand reflects IKEA’s development towards a modern and youthful living concept in the 1980s and 1990s. During this period, IKEA increasingly moved away from traditional furniture and drew more inspiration from Italian design and pop culture.

Its unusual shape, reminiscent of a cactus, is characteristic. Rutger Andersson himself said that a cactus had inspired him in this design and that he was looking for a piece of furniture that could be packaged flat but also assembled easily. These qualities remain a hallmark of IKEA to this day.

The clothes rail is made of chrome-plated steel tubes. The construction combines a three-legged tripod frame, also known as a tripod base, with flexible hook crowns.

Condition: The coat stand is in good vintage condition with light signs of use accumulated over the years. The steel tube frame has light scratches.
