The Maralunga sofa was designed in 1973 by Vico Magistretti for Cassina and is now considered one of the most significant designs in Italian furniture design of the 1970s. Characteristic of the design are its generous, softly upholstered form and adjustable backrests. A mechanism patented by Cassina and concealed inside allows the individual back sections to be moved from a low position to a high, supportive position. The Maralunga was awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. The items offered are two two-seater sofas from Cassina’s first series, dating from 1974. The sofas are fully upholstered in high-quality brown leather, which has developed a particularly beautiful, natural patina over the years. The soft seat cushions, voluminous armrests and movable back sections give the design its characteristic appearance. It was precisely the combination of a restrained outer form and the innovative adjustability for its time that made the Maralunga one of Cassina’s most successful designs. The individually adjustable backrests change not only the seating comfort but also the silhouette of the furniture – from a low, open form to a high backrest with a pronounced headrest. Condition: Good original vintage condition with age- and usage-related signs. The brown leather shows an even patina with creasing as well as occasional superficial scratches. Visible signs of use are present on some edges. One armrest is somewhat more worn; see detailed photos. Overall, the leather is well maintained and has an authentic appearance consistent with its age. Dimensions: L160 x W85 x H80 cm Seat height 40 cm Armrest height 53 cm Backrest raised H102 cm
