Expressive ceramic vessel sculpture by Dresden artist Katharina Eichler. The object combines archaic-looking vessel forms with a clear, almost graphic-modernist design, giving it a particularly strong sculptural presence. The flat, organically curved form is composed in various earth and natural tones. Brown, sand and black are separated by precisely placed lines. On the front, a striking black meander or labyrinth motif forms the focal point of the design. Characteristic of Eichler’s work is the use of the Nerikomi technique, in which differently coloured clays are combined and built into a multicoloured ceramic structure. The design thus emerges from the material itself rather than merely from paint applied afterwards. The grainy, matte and highly tactile surface emphasises the handcrafted sculptural character. The slender silhouette and slightly asymmetrical, organic structure change in effect depending on the viewing angle. The contrast between the light central zone and the dark brown sections at the neck and base is particularly appealing. The dark rim of the opening adds another graphic accent. Condition Good used condition with visible irregularities consistent with the handmade character. A few darker areas or signs of use are visible on the light front. An exceptional piece of contemporary German ceramic art with strong collector’s and object character . Dimensions: L18 x W7 x H28 cm
