Decorative Italian glass demijohn made from mouth-blown green glass with original wicker basketwork made of willow. Such large glass demijohns were traditionally used for storing and transporting wine, olive oil, or water and are now sought-after living objects with a Mediterranean rustic character. What is particularly beautiful about this piece is the combination of the green-glimmering glass, the hand-woven wicker body, and the original manufacturer label Oleificio Valentino Tomatis from Cortemilia, Italy. The robust wicker structure with side carry handles and a solid wooden base gives the object a sculptural effect and makes it especially attractive both as a standalone piece and as a decorative floor object. Thanks to the warm natural materials and the authentic patina, the demijohn is an excellent fit for Mediterranean rustic or Mid-Century-inspired interiors. Historical glass demijohns of this type were used mainly in Italy and southern France and are now very popular due to their handcrafted production and decorative character. Comparable Italian examples are traded internationally as decorative collector’s items.
