Exceptional dining table by Carlo Malnati, created in Italy in the 1980s. A particularly expressive example of postmodern Italian furniture design, in which sculptural form, elaborate woodwork and a freely shaped glass top merge into an almost object-like piece of furniture.

The base consists of a curved, organically shaped wooden body whose flowing lines extend from the two supporting surfaces, across a gentle curve, to beneath the glass top. Depending on the viewing angle, the appearance of the table changes considerably: from the front, the construction appears almost delicate and floating, while from the side, the powerful, sculptural form of the wooden body becomes apparent.

The elaborate marquetry work is particularly characteristic. Different types of wood and veneers form abstract, freely flowing compositions in natural wood, burr wood, dark grey and violet tones. The grain patterns are deliberately used as a design element. The result is less reminiscent of conventional furniture decoration than of an abstract pictorial composition that continues across the table’s three-dimensional surface.

A generously sized, asymmetrically shaped glass top with a polished edge rests on the base. The transparency of the glass leaves the marquetry underneath fully visible while also reinforcing the impression of a floating tabletop.

Condition:
Good authentic vintage condition with age-related traces. The glass top has a few isolated cracks. The wooden construction and marquetry are overall in very beautiful condition.
