This chess set by Giuseppe Vasari consists of thirty-two cast metal chess pieces and a matching raised chessboard. The pieces are cast in bronze using the lost-wax process and feature hand-finished accents with 24-karat gilding as well as silver plating. The design of the pieces is inspired by medieval motifs and includes standing rulers in ceremonial garments, rearing knights on warhorses, and rooks designed as detailed fortress towers.
The height of the pieces varies between approximately 3.5 and 4.75 inches (approx. 8.9 to 12.1 cm). The principal pieces – including kings, queens and knights – bear the cast signature “Vasari” on the outer side or back of their bases. Some of the other pieces, such as the rooks and bishops, have no visible signature; this is a known characteristic of these handmade sets.
The square chessboard measures approximately 20.75 inches on each side (approx. 52.7 cm) and rests on four horse-shaped bronze corner supports. The playing surface consists of alternating polished squares of green onyx and reddish marble, set into a heavy, richly decorated bronze frame. The edge of the frame is adorned with neoclassical high-relief ornaments. The entire set is made in Italy and reflects the traditional craftsmanship for which “La Bottega del Vasari” is known.
