Antique shell cameo, Italy, late 18th century, in a frame. Rare depiction: Angelica and Medoro carve their names into the bark of a tree, the central scene from Ariosto’s (1474 - 1533) "Orlando Furioso", which is responsible for the hero’s eponymous madness. Depiction after a painting by Teodoro Mateini (1754 - 1831); a comparable carving (less well preserved) is displayed in the permanent exhibition of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London: Exceptionally fine and artistically outstanding work, formerly mounted in a solid burr wood frame, which has a wonderfully warm lustre thanks to its shellac polish.
