The Göhner developments are a testimony to Switzerland’s boom years. In a short time, the company of “construction tycoon” Ernst Göhner created a residential landscape made of prefabricated building elements: between 1965 and 1975, Ernst Göhner AG built 9,000 prefabricated-panel apartments in the Swiss Plateau. Today, just over 20,000 people live in these identical-looking apartments in Greifensee, Volketswil, Fällanden and Neuenhof. When the 65-year-old embarked on his last great adventure and began revolutionising the Swiss construction industry with a tightly managed production chain for prefabricated buildings, the response was considerable. Popular parlance collectively calls the developments “Göhnerswil”. Ernst Göhner AG’s drive to maximise profits becomes emblematic of business practices under capitalism. Today, the buzzwords of that time are once again on everyone’s lips: reports about “immigration”, the “housing shortage”, the “construction boom” and “urban sprawl” fill newspaper columns. The book attempts to answer the question of what can be learned from the Göhner developments today. The former protagonists, long since retired, recall how they had already held exactly the same debates forty years ago. Alongside numerous historical photographs, a photographic essay by Oliver Lang shows the developments as they are today.
