An extremely rare version of a stereo Telefunken M5 tape machine. It is known to connoisseurs as the Telefunken M5 “Spezial” or “Rapid”. Only 20 examples of this machine were manufactured. These machines were comprehensively overhauled and modified in the 1990s by Hilmar Pauly and Hans-Peter Roth. Hilmar Pauly was the inventor of the renowned PaulyTon pop filter and a specialist in digital control technology. Dipl.-Ing. Hans-Peter Roth was a technician and expert in Telefunken and Studer tape machines for 40 years. The aim was to rectify the faults of the failure-prone M5 drives and modernise the control system. A digital control system was developed for this purpose, enabling a modern workflow with locating functions. The complete amplifier unit was specially manufactured in Germany by ADT (known for high-quality studio technology). The amplifiers feature a transistor circuit with transformers. The head mount is compatible with that of a conventional M5. The recording heads are from Bogen (Made in Germany). The machine was calibrated according to PER 528. The speed is 19 and 38 cm/s. Its technical and visual condition is excellent! There are two forums with discussions about this M5. One connoisseur wrote verbatim: “There are no used examples as good as this machine!” This is a unique opportunity to acquire with certainty the best M5 and one of the best tape machines ever made. The weight is 31.5 kg. The machine is therefore portable and can be carried by one person.
