The 'rugged' appearance of the surface is due to separation between the outer material and the inner lining. Unfortunately, this is a known defect of Le Pliage bags, which tend to develop it over time.
This does not affect the functionality of the bag and the appearance is not unpleasant. Hardware and leather are, however, in good condition.
