The coloured silver coin was minted from one ounce of 99.9% silver and is dedicated to one of Australia’s best-known landmarks – the Great Barrier Reef. The design features a copperband butterflyfish, a clownfish and corals, representing the beauty of Australia’s underwater world. A genuine saltwater pearl has also been integrated into the design as a special feature. The inscription “GREAT BARRIER REEF” completes the design. The reverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the weight, fineness, face value and year of issue. The edge of the coin has also been given an individual number.

The world-famous Great Barrier Reef lies off Australia’s northeast coast and stretches for around 2,300 km. It is the largest connected collection of more than 2,900 individual coral reefs on Earth. In 1981, UNESCO declared it a World Natural Heritage Site. It is also considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
