Chenrezig in Mahāyāna Buddhism is the bodhisattva of great compassion
Avalokiteśvara (Tib. sPyan-ras-gzigs dbang-phyug) in the Tibetan tradition. This Avalokiteśvara is painted as Ḍaḍakārīn (Lord of the six syllables: ḍaḍ‑akṣara), i.e. of the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum. As Ḍaḍakārīn, Avalokiteśvara is seated in cross‑legged posture (padmāsana). With the four hands he holds: on the right a rosary (akṣamālā, usually composed of 108 beads, but in this painting formed as the submultiple of 54) reciting the mantra on each bead; on the left a lotus flower (padma), symbol of purity; and with the pair of central hands Avalokiteśvara holds a jewel called cintāmaṇi (wish‑fulfilling jewel) ready to grant any desire and here represented by an oval light‑blue crystal.
