The two pendants shown in the images are characteristic examples of traditional Nepalese craftsmanship, made of silver and decorated with lapis lazuli, an intense blue semi-precious stone highly valued for its symbolic and decorative significance. 1 Round pendant (left) Material: Hand-worked silver, with decorative spheres and filigree, and lapis lazuli divided into segments (mosaic style) around a central round stone. The style recalls solar symbolism, with a radial arrangement that may represent the sun or the wheel of dharma (an important symbolic element in Buddhism). Technique: Plate setting with turned elements and punched details. 2. Pendant (right) More elaborate shape, with a raised hexagonal or floral base. Material: Silver decorated with small spheres and thin metal strips securing the stones. Well-polished cabochon lapis lazuli, arranged in a flower or central spiral, with six decorative lateral arms recalling tantric or floral motifs of Vajrayana Buddhism, widespread in Nepal. Cabochon setting with raised details. The lateral segments resemble the “lotus petals” or “arms” of a mandala-like figure. Cultural and symbolic considerations Lapis lazuli is considered a symbol of wisdom, spiritual depth and healing. Worked using traditional techniques, it is typical of the Newar communities of Nepal and Tibetan peoples, who often produce jewellery intended both for everyday use and ritual functions. These pendants may have been used as amulets, ritual ornaments, or as part of ceremonial necklaces, especially for women or as auspicious gifts, from regions such as Mustang, Dolpo or eastern Tibet.
