"If, with the Newton pendulum, you deflect one of the balls and let it hit the others, something unexpected happens: the ball comes to a stop. Instead, a ball flies off on the opposite side of the Newton pendulum. If you repeat this with two balls, two balls also move away. This works even when you deflect four of the five balls. In this case too, on the opposite side of the Newton pendulum four balls are thrown away, while one (relatively) remains hanging quietly.
