Hand-painted wall picture on a carved wooden panel, signed. Motif: Boat / maritime scene. The artist Giannis Galatis is among the emblematic personalities of the island of Mykonos and is considered one of the island’s defining figures. Galatis was a self-taught painter, decorator, fashion and jewellery designer, author, and an amateur singer. His works were part of Mykonos’s artistic scene, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. He dressed and worked for famous personalities such as Julie Christie, Elizabeth Taylor, Ingrid Bergman, and Jackie Onassis. Most international visitors and celebrities who visited Mykonos also came to his gallery – the “Galatis Art Gallery”, which he founded in 1958 in Mykonos. This work is a typical example of his maritime motifs, hand-painted on a carved wooden panel – a style closely linked to the Mediterranean art scene of the Aegean.
