"Evan Hansen has always had trouble fitting in. He has no friends, talks to no one except his 'mother' and his therapist. The latter gives him a daily exercise: to write letters to himself. However, Connor, one of his classmates, steals one of them. A few hours later, he is found dead. The young man has committed suicide.
Finding the letter in his pocket, Connor's parents think it was written by Connor for Evan, and are delighted to discover that, after all, Connor had a friend who tried to save him.
