Special Edition DVD of the South African film „Tsotsi“ (2005), directed by Gavin Hood. The film made history by being the first South African production to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006. Contents and plot: The story takes place in Soweto, a slum in Johannesburg, and follows a young, unscrupulous leader of a street gang nicknamed „Tsotsi“ (meaning something like „thug“ or „gangster“). His life changes abruptly when, after a car theft and the shooting of the owner, he finds a baby in the back seat. Instead of leaving it behind, he decides to take care of it. This sets in motion a process of redemption and forces him to face his past and his humanity. Production details: Based on the novel of the same name by Athol Fugard. Main cast: Presley Chweneyagae as Tsotsi and Terry Pheto as Miriam. Music: The soundtrack is a key element of the film and highlights the Kwaito genre (a mix of house music and African rhythms), featuring the artist Zola. Language: The film is mainly spoken in „Tsotsi Taal“, a South African street dialect. Awards: In addition to the Oscar, the film received other major awards, such as the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (2005), and was nominated for the Golden Globe and the BAFTA Award.
