In this square piece, Medsan stages an exceptionally elegant connection that brings together the noble figure of the samurai with the centuries-old art of blue-and-white Japanese porcelain and the philosophy of *Kintsugi*. The warrior – wrapped in armour and a *Kabuto* helmet – is depicted entirely in cobalt-blue shades on a surface in the style of craquelé porcelain, with the cracks highlighted by fine gold veins. This unique reproduction evokes the rich heritage of the important kilns of Arita and Imari, the cradle of underglaze blue painting (*Sometsuke*).
The effect of the composition is based on its material illusion: a genuine *trompe-l’œil* of glazed porcelain. The drawing, captivating in its delicacy, imitates the brushwork with cobalt oxide – with chrysanthemum motifs, stylized waves and dragons that adorn the armour and the unfolded fans, accented by nuances of iron red. A web of craquelé lines runs through the entire work; the most pronounced cracks are repaired using the *Kintsugi* technique with gold – a method that honours the break rather than hiding it.
