Summary:
In the Big City occupied by foreign Armies, famine threatens. A mother therefore leads her children to the countryside, to their grandmother. Illiterate, stingy, mean and even murderous, she makes life hard for the twins. Far from being defeated, they learn on their own the laws of life, of writing and of cruelty. Abandoned to themselves, devoid of the slightest moral sense, they set themselves the task of recording, each day, in a large notebook, the account of their progress and the list of their misdeeds.
The Notebook offers an incisive fable about the miseries of war and totalitarianism, but also a true coming-of-age novel dominated by black humour.
