For sale is this rare, antique Romansh book of songs and prayers («Cudesch») from the 18th century (Graubünden / Surselva). The work contains religious songs and psalms with historical musical scores (including choral pieces for alto and bass such as «Tiers la S. Tscheina / Char Senger Jesu...»), as well as religious texts and prayers in the Sursilvan language (up to page 256). The title page is missing (the book begins directly with the song section on page 1), but the volume contains an exceptionally rich collection of handwritten ownership entries from Graubünden families: Catharina Cadonau dated 1765, notes referring to Waltensburg from 1795, Schanfadiel, and Lucius Cadonau in 1819. The book is bound in an original, thick period leather binding over wooden boards with blind tooling and two historic metal clasps (the leather straps are aged and partially torn off, fittings present). The condition is authentic for an age of around 250 years: binding rubbed, edges bumped, book block firm, handmade paper with signs of age and use, title page missing (see original photos for details). A rare cultural and historical collector’s item for enthusiasts of Rhaetica and the linguistic and ecclesiastical history of Graubünden.
