Its design illustrates one of the greatest Māori legends: Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, and Ranginui, the Sky Father, were once united in an eternal embrace, plunging the world into darkness. When they were separated, light finally appeared, giving birth to the world as we know it. It was in this new light that Aotearoa emerged, the ancestral name of New Zealand, often translated as “the land of the long white cloud”.
