Right from the first photo by Douglas Kirkland, the viewer unmistakably gets a sense of what to expect from this photo book: 'MADEMOISELLE – PRIVÉ' is written on a door, and these two words reveal a lot about the photographer's perspective on his subject: Coco Chanel in the summer of 1962. Kirkland, who was then working for Look in Paris, followed Coco Chanel with his camera from her suite at the Ritz, photographing her in her apartment, at Studio 31 on Rue Cambon, and at a fashion show. His pictures show the eighty-year-old fashion icon at work in the last unblemished year of her extraordinary career. Ageless, sometimes almost seductive, is the smile with which Coco Chanel turns to the camera. Few pictures of her, not even from her younger years, show such lightness in her gaze.

Karl Lagerfeld sums up in the foreword of this volume: 'Images that remain in the end are stronger than the truth. With the help of Kirkland's pictures, we can imagine what the famous Coco was like before she became the legendary Chanel.'
