God of War: Ascension is an action-adventure hack-and-slash game developed by Santa Monica Studio and released in 2013 exclusively for the PlayStation 3 (PS3).

It serves as a prequel to the entire God of War series and depicts Kratos’ struggle six months after Ares drove him to kill his family.

Prequel story:
The single-player campaign deals with Kratos’ quest for freedom from his blood oath to Ares and his captivity and torture by the three Furies.

Combat mechanics:
The game builds on the series’ combo-based combat and introduces new features, including the ability to pick up and switch “world weapons” (swords, spears, clubs, shields), an input system without prompts for quick-time events, and time-manipulation mechanics (Uroboros Amulet) for puzzles.

Multiplayer mode:
Ascension was the first and only entry in the series with an online multiplayer mode, supporting up to 8 players in objective-based combat scenarios. Players could align with different gods (Zeus, Ares, Poseidon, or Hades) to unlock customizations for their gladiator character. 

Note:
The online multiplayer servers for this game are indeed still operational in 2025.

Graphics and audio:
The game offers HD video output (up to 720p) and was designed to support stereoscopic 3D. Reviewers praised the visually impressive graphics and cinematic scope that pushed the PS3 hardware.
