Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 for Nintendo GameCube was generally well received and is regarded as a high point of the series, redefining the career mode by removing the time limit and introducing mission-based "Free-Skate." 

New Career Mode:
Unlike previous games, there is no fixed two-minute time limit per level. Instead, players can freely explore the expansive levels and take on goals by interacting with in-game characters.

New Tricks:
The game introduced new tricks such as "Skitching" (holding onto cars) and "Spine Transfers", which greatly expanded combo possibilities.

Levels and Characters:
There are nine amateur levels (including College, San Francisco, Alcatraz and London) as well as unlockable bonus levels and a wide selection of professional skaters like Tony Hawk, Bam Margera and Rodney Mullen. There are also secret characters to unlock depending on the version, such as Jango Fett or Iron Maiden’s mascot Eddie.

Difficulty:
While early objectives serve as tutorials, later tasks, such as achieving very high scores in a short time, are described as very challenging.

Multiplayer:
Various multiplayer modes are available, including Trick Attack, Graffiti and King of the Hill.
