The vampires now live among us. They owe this to a scientist who invented artificial blood under the brand "True Blood". But although humans are no longer on the menu, mortal bipeds remain skeptical. Religion and politics have long since turned against the bloodsuckers - only in the small town of Bon Temps in Louisiana does everything still follow its disorderly course.


At the centre of "True Blood" is 25-year-old waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who knows exactly what it feels like to be an outsider: Sookie is "gifted" with the ability to read minds, which usually gets her into trouble. Sookie has long since taken the strangers to heart - and especially one of them: Bill Compton, a charismatic young-looking man who is in fact 173 years old. His thoughts remain hidden from Sookie, which makes him all the more attractive to her.

There is also Sookie's brother Jason, a womaniser and vampire-hater who eventually trains to become a vampire hunter. And more residents populate the small town: the tough Tara, Sookie's best friend; Sam, owner of Merlotte's bar and a secret shapeshifter who never confesses to Sookie what he feels for her; Lafayette, the gay bon vivant who is constantly planning new schemes and earns his money with erotic sites and drugs; and other quirky residents who prefer the darkness of night because they all have something to hide.
