This chair is an outstanding classic of Danish craftsmanship and Danish Modern. The JH503 is one of Hans J. Wegner’s best-known designs worldwide. Its timeless silhouette and precise workmanship make it one of the most sought-after collector’s pieces in Mid-Century design. “The Chair” achieved iconic historical status in 1960, when John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon sat on it during the first live televised US presidential debate.
Solid teak with warm, deep colouring and fantastic patina. Black leather seat. Craftsmanship: Elaborately crafted wooden joints on the characteristic backrest.
The original, well-preserved brand stamp of Johannes Hansen, Copenhagen, is present. Based on its execution, it is presumably a rare, early example from the beginning of production.
Condition: Very attractive vintage condition appropriate to its age. The wooden frame is absolutely stable and free of structural defects. The original teak and leather show slight, authentic signs of use (scratches in the leather and knocks), which give the furniture its genuine character. This is deliberately an untouched vintage original and not a complete restoration.
