Items on the platform
Depop is solely focusing on fashion, while marko has three secondhand categories: Fashion, electronics and home. Since Depop is an international marketplace, many items will be from sellers abroad. marko is exclusively Swiss, so all secondhand pieces are from here and can be picked up or delivered by the Swiss Post with no hassle.
Buying journey
Both Depop and marko are social marketplaces where you can browse seller profiles and buy with one click, but marko offers you more payment and delivery options. Since Depop is an international marketplace, it isn’t optimized for Switzerland: PayPal is the only payment method available. With marko, you’re able to use on-platform payments by credit or debit card as well as TWINT.
Buyer Protection
If you get scammed on Depop, you’ll have to make a claim via Paypal’s Protections Policy to try to get your money back, since Depop Protection for buyers isn’t available in Switzerland. On marko, all transactions are handled via the platform, and the money only gets paid out once the transaction is completed. That way, we can protect all buyers from fraud: If the item never arrives or is not as advertised, you receive your money back without any hassle.
Seller Protection
If you don’t receive your money on Depop, you need to contact Paypal for a solution, as their seller protection does not apply in Switzerland. On marko, the buyer’s payment gets reserved as soon as they buy an item, so you don’t have to worry about buyers not paying you. Once the transaction is completed, we will automatically issue the payout to your bank account. This ensures that you will always get paid for your secondhand sales.
Shipping
On Depop, sellers have to handle shipping themselves, as there is no shipping integration available in Switzerland. On marko, you can choose between three shipping options: In addition to custom shipping and pick-up, marko also offers Easy Shipping. With Easy Shipping, we send you a shipping kit with a marko-tag and the pre-printed stick-on label: All you have to do is stick it on your parcel, put it in your mailbox, attach the marko-tag and the Post picks it up - everything for CHF 7.-, paid by the buyers.
Platform fees
Depop charges a selling fee of 10% plus PayPal charges, based on the item sale price. On marko, the fees are split: 5% for the buyer protection and CHF 1 + 1.9% for the seller transaction fee, both based on the item price. If for example, you sell a jacket for CHF 50.-, the fees would be CHF 5.- (plus PayPal charges) on Depop vs. CHF 1.95 on marko.
Conclusion:
Now it’s up to you to decide where you buy and sell your secondhand items. Which platform suits you best? How important are fees, shipping services or a local community to you?? If you choose marko, we are looking forward to you becoming a part of our community!
